That notion that taking a siesta is one of Spain´s national sports is a myth. Spaniards, believe it or not, are actually well known in the international sports arena and take pride in their teams and national heroes such as Rafa Nadal, Fernando Alonso, Mireia Belmonte and Marc Gasol. Today, we´d like to share some of this Spring´s highlights so you too can take part of the best sporting events of the year and root for your favorite teams from the bleachers.

Did you know that some of the world´s highest paid athletes are Spanish? Would you like one more interesting fact before we get started? The five most practiced sports by Spaniards are: Soccer, Swimming, Cycling, Running and Mountain Climbing, in that order.

Every spring, at the end of April, the Rock n’ Roll Annual Marathon takes place in Madrid, where 15,000 runners blaze thru the Spanish capital in a 42km route. There is a much shorter (10k) route and both make for a spectacular sightseeing tour. Unfortunately, the deadline for inscriptions was April 12th but you can still download the map to get familiar with the sights and join the cheering crowds of madrileños.

If you´re into paddle boarding and haven’t registered for the Xtreme Long Distance (a total of 125 km) Race around the island of Ibiza, make sure you write it down on next years´ calendar. Considered to be the most challenging Paddle Board event in the world, it´s also a great excuse to visit the island.

The Real Club Naútico de Palma on the island of Majorca celebrates Palma Vela, a spectacular sailing race that begins April 30th and ends May 3rd. Again, another great excuse to visit another magical island, home of Rafa Nadal.

Surely, you´ve heard of Iron Man before. For those who have no idea, it´s a multi-event sporting contest in the form of a consecutive triathlon of swimming, cycling, and running. Well, this year, Iron Man will be held in Lanzarote, on the northern edge of the Canary Islands and due to the strong winds and rough terrain, experts agree that it will be the toughest Iron man event in the world. You can register right here for the May 23rd Triathlon…if you´re brave enough.

Bilbao, home of the Guggenheim Museum, amazing tapas and spectacular bodegas (which you can visit), is also where the yearly triathlon in this region is held. Here, you won’t need as much stamina as required by the Iron Man race. In Bilbao there is 2 km of swimming, 90km of cycling and 21 km of running. A fabulous way to blend sports and the best food and wine in Spain, all in one. Make sure to visit their English site to sign up for the May 30th Bilbao Triathlon.

If you´d rather join the crowds and cheer we have lined up the best sporting highlights in Spain so you can start making your spring plans.

One of the annual sport events is the Madrid Open, which features the world´s best tennis stars. This is your chance to enjoy 10 days of exhilarating matches. From May 1st to May 10th. Make sure you get your tickets before they sell out.

May is also the month of the Golf Open European Tour and the Spanish Formula I Gran Prix, both held in Barcelona. While Madrid hosts the 2-day Basketball Euro-league Final Tour at the Barclaycard Center.

Are you a sports fan? What sports do you practice? We encourage you to tell us all about it so we can update you with specific information.
